At least 47 people have been killed and dozens injured after fuel tanker exploded at a checkpoint outside the city of Hilla, south of Baghdad, Iraqi security officials have said.

The attack happened shortly after noon local time when dozens of cars were queuing at the checkpoint.

The BBC reports that the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
