Obama to Designate National Monument to Honor Women’s Equality

U.S. President Barack Obama will designate Washington D.C.’s Sewall-Belmont House, which has served as the National Women’s Party’s headquarters since 1929, as a national monument Tuesday.

The monument will be called the “Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument” after Alva Belmont and Alice Paul, two women’s suffrage movement leaders.

The house holds an archival collection that documents the history of the women’s suffrage movement in the United States and around the globe.

The designation coincides with Equal Pay Day, which aims to highlight the pay gap between men and women.
