Rare tornado kills four, injures hundreds in Uruguay

A tornado tore through the town of Dolores, Uruguay on Friday, killing four and injuring 200 others, according to local media reports.

Tornadoes are fairly uncommon in the region.

Officials have confirmed that the tornado caused significant damage to residential homes. Dolores has a population of about 20,000.

Juan Andres Roballo, an official with President Vázquez’s office, said: “The president has ordered the deployment of all the resources in the state to attend to the situation in Delores.”

According to Todo Noticias, the Meteorological Service of Uruguay had given an alert color of orange, the second highest alert, and called for heavy rain, wind, thunder and hail. However, a tornado was not expected.
