New Jersey Transit Train Crashes Into Hoboken Station

Casualties are feared after a train crashed into a station into station in Hoboken, New Jersey

At least one person is dead with 108 others injured after a New Jersey Transit train crashed into a station in Hoboken, New Jersey during the morning rush hour Thursday.

NJ Transit, PATH, and Hudson Bergen Light Rail service were suspended in and out of the terminal station. As of 3p.m. ET, PATH service has been restored between Hoboken and New York. Local buses and ferries are honoring train tickets due to the accident.

According to a CNN producer that spoke to a NJ Transit employee that witnessed the crash, the train went airborne after hitting a concrete block, causing it to hit the roof of station.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie confirmed in an interview with CNN that all people have been rescued from the train.

According to a hospital spokesperson, at least 22 patients have been transported to Hoboken University Medical Center (roughly a mile away from the station) — one of which is a pediatric with the others in “walking wounded” condition. No patients are in critical condition. Hoboken University Medical isn’t a Level 1 Trauma Center, and patients with more serious injuries are being transferred to Jersey City Medical Center.

According to Jersey City Medical Center CEO Joseph Scott, 11 patients are in serious condition. Three of them are trauma patients with orthopedic, internal injuries and deep lacerations, with the other eight in less serious condition. 40 “walking wounded” patients were triaged in a cafeteria, with the majority of those anticipated to be discharged. According to Chief Medical Officer Ken Garay, none of the injuries are life-threatening.
