At least 12 people are dead with 48 others wounded after a truck plowed into a crowd at a Christmas market in Berlin Monday.

The suspected Pakistani driver was arrested but later released due to insufficient evidence, while a Polish passenger was killed “on the spot” with a pistol, according to police. That weapon has not been found.

The market is situated at the foot of the Kaiser Wilheim memorial church, which was kept as a bombed-out ruin after World War II.
The truck plowed into the market at an extremely crowded time, as people gathered around the traditional cluster of wooden huts to purchase last-minute gifts.
Police are treating the situation as a terror attack and have urged people in Berlin to stay home and cooperate with the investigation. In a Tuesday press conference, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said that there was “no doubt” that the situation is terror-related. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility through its Amaq news agency.
