In ruling, Venezuela court reverses order removing power from congress

Venezuela’s supreme court canceled a ruling on Saturday to strip legislative powers from the National Assembly. On Wednesday, the high court ruled it could take over the powers of the opposition-controlled National Assembly. The decision was condemned by the Organization of American States, which stated that they “denounced the self-inflicted coup d’état perpetrated by the Venezuelan regime” and that the congress was “the last branch of government to be legitimized by the will of the people”. OAS scheduled a special meeting at its Washington, DC headquarters on Monday, April 3. Venezuela’s top prosecutor also spoke out on Friday against the ruling, calling it a “rupture” of constitutional order. Luisa Ortego Diaz, a long-time government loyalist and ally of President Nicolás Maduro, also called for “reflection so that the democratic path can be retaken”. The country continues to face several crises as inflation increases and basic supplies, such as medicine, are in severe short supply.
