Two reported dead as severe weather outbreak hits southern United States
A mother and daughter were reportedly killed as an EF1 tornado hit their mobile home in a Lafayette, Louisiana suburb Sunday morning, according to Major Ginny Higgins with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office.
A severe weather outbreak in the U.S. south has prompted the Storm Prediction Center to issue a rare “high risk” for damaging storms and tornadoes in the outlook for Sunday.
In another rare move, the SPC issued a particularly dangerous situation tornado watch for parts of eastern Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The watch area includes the heavily populated cities of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Jackson, Mississippi.
The severe weather threat moves into much of Alabama and Georgia into Monday, according to the SPC.
