Hazardous waves possible after large earthquake hits southern Philippines

A magnitude-7.2 #earthquake just shook the Philippines. Hazardous #tsunami waves are possible within 186 miles (300 km) of the epicenter.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake’s preliminary magnitude was 6.8 while USGS measured it at 7.2. The quake struck around 4:30 a.m. local time off the southwest coast of Sarangani province, about 26km (16 miles) southwest of Balangonan at a depth of around 43km (27miles). The PTWC said waves 0.3-1 meter over the tidal level are possible some parts of the Philippine coast. Waves are forecast to be less than 0.3 meters above tide level for the coasts of Indoniesa, Malaysia, Palau and Yap. No tsunami threat exists to Australia or the Pacific US.
