Counterterrorism officers with Ireland’s national police force An Garda Síochána arrested two men in Dublin on Monday, May 8 for offenses under the country’s 2015 Terrorist Offenses Act.
On the 8th of May 2017 a male Algerian national and a male Moroccan national in their 30’s and 40’s were arrested in the Dublin area for offences pursuant to The Terrorist Offences Act 2015 as amended by members of the Counter Terrorism International Unit.
Garda statement
Both men are detained at Blackrock Garda station. The statement said a number of searches were carried out in Swords, Stepaside, South Circular Road and Trim.
The 2015 Terrorist Offenses Act amended a 2005 law to add public incitement, recruitment and training for terrorism.
On Sunday, TheJournal.ie reported that the Garda Special Detective Unit was carrying out survillence operations on more than 20 people in Dublin, County Mayo and County Galway believed to be Islamic State sympathizers or suspected of money laundering.
Last month, a man and a woman were arrested in Waterford City on suspicion of involvement in Islamic-related terrorist activity. Gardaí said the pair, both in their 20s, were suspected of involvement in facilitating foreign terrorist offenses.
Update, May 9 (0930 GMT): One of the men, a Moroccan national, has been released without charge, RTE reported. A file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
