11 children among 14 people killed after explosion in Mexico firework warehouse

At least 14 people were killed including 11 minors and 30 others injured after an explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Chilchotla, Mexico

At least 14 people including 11 minors were killed and at least 22 others injured after an explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Chilchotla, Mexico, late on Monday, May 8.

Javier Lozano Alarcón, a spokesperson for the Government of the State of Puebla in southeast Mexico, said 22 people were being treated for severe head trauma, third degree burns and leg fractures.

An earlier government statement said 12 people had been killed.

A stray rocket landed in a house used to store fireworks for a May 15 parish celebration in honour of San Isidro Labrador, causing the explosion.

The explosion reportedly demolished up to three buildings, resulting in nine deaths on the site and five more in hospitals in Quimixtlán and Guadalupe Victoria.

Mexico is no stranger to deadly fireworks explosions. On December 20, 2016, at least 39 people were killed and dozens injured after an explosion at the San Pablito fireworks market in Tultepec, north of Mexico City.
