Man strikes pedestrians near mosque in London, leaving one dead and 10 injured

A 48-year old man drove a van into pedestrians just after midnight on June 19 on Seven Sisters Road in North London, injuring 10 people and leaving one person dead. Two people were treated for injuries on the scene but were not hospitalized. The Muslim Council of Britain said the people hit were leaving their nightly worship at Finsbury Park Mosque on Seven Sisters Road in North London. London Metropolitan Police officers arrested the driver of the van who had been physically detained by nearby civilians. Police are not aware of any other suspects. Counter Terrorism Command has taken over investigations, according to Met Police. In a statement on Monday, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism said it was unclear if the man who died was killed by the driver:
“The attack unfolded whilst a man was receiving first aid from the public at the scene, sadly, he has died. Any causative link between his death and the attack will form part of our investigation. It is too early to state if his death was as a result of the attack.” Metropolitan Police statement
Police are treating the attack as a possible terrorist incident. Following a meeting of the emergency committee COBRA on Monday morning, Prime Minister Theresa May said police believe the attacker acted alone. The Muslim Council urged people to be “calm as the investigation establishes the full facts, and in these last days of Ramadan, pray for those affected and for justice.”
