In the early hours of Friday morning, seven people were injured – two seriously – when they were hit by a car in Cambrils, around 120km south of Barcelona.
Images from the scene show an overturned Audi A3.
Police shot and killed five people who were in the car, some of whom were wearing what appeared to be explosive belts.
Later, Catalan interior minister Joaquim Forn said the belts were fake.
Javier Zaragoza, of the Audiencia Nacional, the Spanish court that deals with terrorism, said that none of the five were known to have links to jihadism.
