Over 100,000 acres scorched as wildfires burn across California

Wildfires burned on Monday across California, wiping out scores of structures and projecting smoke as far south as Los Angeles. High winds combined with low humidity triggered the blazes Sunday night, burning over 100,000 acres across the state.

According to officials, 17 fires are burning in the state, destroying at least 1,500 structures across California.

At least 11 people are dead and two people have suffered serious injuries.

According to California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Director Ken Pimlott, an estimated 20,000 people have been evacuated.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has issued a state of emergency.

Multiple blazes threatening California

The Tubbs Fire, which is burning near Calistoga, has already scorched 27,000 acres and forced parts of Santa Rosa to evacuate. The city of Santa Rosa also issued a curfew on Monday night starting at 6:45 p.m.

Safari West, a 400-acre African animal preserve in Santa Rosa, has accounted for all the animals in the facility.

The Atlas Fire south of Lake Berryessa in Napa County has burned at least 25,000 acres while the Partrick Fire, which ignited west of Napa, has torched roughly 3,000 acres.

Cal Fire says that the Nuns Fire north of Glen Ellen in Sonoma County has burned 5,000 acres.

According to Cal Fire, the Point Fire in West Point 66 miles east of Sacramento, has burned 130 acres and is now 25 percent contained.

Meanwhile, an evacuation order has been ordered for zones 9, 4 and 10 because of the Honey Fire in Paradise, 86 miles north of Sacramento.

According to a California Highway Patrol officer, 44 people were rescued by helicopter overnight from the Alta Peaks fire ranging in age from 5 to 91.

Comcast has opened its Xfinity WiFi hotspots to all who may need it at no cost in the Napa and Sonoma areas.

Airbnb has activated its Disaster Response Program to assist residents affected by the Tubbs and Atlas fires. Homes are being offered by Airbnb hosts in San Francisco and parts of Marin and Alameda Counties for free until October 30.

“We encourage hosts in safe areas to aid in this effort by listing their available rooms or homes on the platform to help the growing number of people evacuating.”

Southern California

The Canyon Fire 2 broke out in the Anaheim Hills neighborhood on Monday, burning 6,000 acres in an area a few miles from Disneyland. It’s burning towards Anaheim and is 5 percent contained.

At least 24 structures were destroyed, according to the Anaheim Fire Department. 1,000 firefighters are responding to the blaze.

The department also confirmed that one firefighter suffered minor injuries.
