Congressional committee recommends to impeach Brazil president

A 65-member congressional committee voted on Monday to recommend impeachment of Brazil President Dilma Rousseff.

A 65-member congressional committee voted on Monday to recommend impeachment of Brazil President Dilma Rousseff.

The vote ended in 38 to 27 in favor of ousting Rousseff, which will lead to a full vote in the lower house on April 17, Reuters reported.

Rousseff has been hit by a corruption scandal on charges of breaking budget laws when she ran for re-election in 2014. She’s been accused of manipulating government budgets, AFP reported.

A poll published on Saturday by Datafolha, a polling company in Brazil, showed that 61 percent of Brazilians supported the impeachment of Rousseff.

Rousseff has also lost the support of many of her allies, including her vice president, Michel Temer, who has sided with the opposition on the impeachment.

On Monday, a tape was leaked shortly before the committee’s vote where Temer discussed the possibility of Rousseff’s ousting, which would make him be Brazil’s next president.

Temer is also linked to the same corruption allegations as Rousseff, whose chief of staff is accusing the vice president of being part of the conspiracy. Datafolha polls show that 58 percent of Brazilians would also like to see Temer ejected.

It would be the first time since 1992 that a Brazilian president has been ousted.
