A Myanmar military transport plane with 104 people onboard went missing somewhere over the western city of Dawei

A Myanmar military transport plane with 120 people onboard went missing somewhere over the western city of Dawei on Wednesday, June 7th. The plane was reportedly carrying 106 military personnel and families, as well as 14 crew.

The Myanmar military has begun search-and-rescue operations to attempt to locate the aircraft.


UPDATE June 15

Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing confirmed search parties found the tail of the missing plane and 90 bodies. The aircraft was determined to be carrying 122 people, including 15 children when it crashed into the Andaman Sea.

Hlaing maintained that weather was the most likely factor for the crash, but the full circumstances remain undetermined.

The plane dropped off radar at 1:35 p.m. local time (7:05 a.m. GMT). General Myat Min Oo confirmed the plane is a Y-8F-200 military transport aircraft.

AFP reported, Naing Lin Zaw, a tourism official in Myeik, that fragments of the plane were found in the Andaman Sea about 218 km (136 miles) from Dawei. An Air Force official confirmed to the news agency that a naval rescue crew found pieces of the damaged aircraft.

The plane was reported to be traveling from Myeik to Rangoon, a travel time of about one hour by air.
